Family Systems Therapy

Family Systems Therapy is based on the understanding that individuals are deeply influenced by their relationships, particularly within their family of origin. Drawing on the work of Dr. Murray Bowen, this approach explores patterns of interaction, emotional reactivity, roles, boundaries, and relational dynamics across generations.

Therapy may involve understanding processes such as emotional cut-off, intergenerational patterns of relating, multigenerational transmission of trauma, and the ways anxiety can become embedded within the nuclear family system. Attention is also given to differentiation of self – the capacity to maintain a clear sense of identity and emotional balance within important relationships, rather than responding primarily through reactivity or avoidance.

Whether navigating complex family dynamics, recurring relational patterns, or longstanding emotional difficulties, Family Systems Therapy supports greater insight into how relational systems shape thoughts, emotions, and behaviour over time. The aim is to foster increased self-awareness, emotional clarity, and more adaptive ways of relating to self and others.
